CGI / Perl Scripts

CGI (Common Gateway Interface) is a standard for running external programs from a Web server. CGI allows the returned HTML page to be dynamic - for example, with a CGI script you could access information in a database and format the results as part of an HTML page. Not surprisingly, CGI scripts are very popular and used extensively throughout the World Wide Web. The scripts below are available to you through Control Panel if you have a hosting account at TenCom.

Forum / Bulletin Board
cPanel allows you to install a pre-made forum called XMB. The XMB Forum is a PHP web-based bulletin board. Unlike an email list or newsgroup, the XMB Forum creates a forum on your web site that allows users to post questions and receive replies, all from their web browser. Once a forum has been created you can modify it extensively, from adding new sub-forums to changing the visual appearance of the board. Entropy Chat is a simple chat script that offers basic features.

The Melange Chat System is a Java chat script that offers a number of advanced features. The steps below are only for installation - for more information detailed information about using the Melange Chat System, please refer to the user guide.

phpMyChat
phpMyChat is a PHP chat room script that uses a mySQL database to store information. Refer to the phpMyChat home page for more information about this script.

CGI Wrapper
The CGI Wrap script creates a scgi-bin folder at the public_html level of your web site. This allows you to run scripts with your own user ID.

The advantage of this is that you can run scripts that have the same permissions that you do - you can write, edit, and delete files as you normally do. In a regular cgi-bin folder, you can only do this if you set your directory permissions to 777 (world access) and file permissions to 666, both of which are quite dangerous as anyone can now modify your web site.

The disadvantage of this is that if there is a security breach in your script that another person can exploit, they have access to your site in the same manner that you do - they can do anything. However, as long as the scripts you run in the scgi-bin directory are secure, you have nothing to worry about.

Random HTML Generator
The Random HTML Generator randomly generates text on your web page. It picks a HTML string out of a list and inserts it in an SSI (Server Side Includes) enabled web page. Your page needs to have a .shtml extension for this feature to work. To setup the Random HTML Generator simply click on it and input the text that you wish to have generated randomly.

Guest Book
This is a simple guestbook script that allows you to create a guestbook that your visitors can sign. You can modify the appearance of the guestbook, and view and manage guestbook entries.

Advanced Guest Book
The Advanced Guestbook script offers more features than the Guestbook script by using PHP and a mySQL database.

Counter
This feature allows you to setup a counter, a clock, or a date box for a page on your website. You need to generate the code for each script that you want to use. To setup this feature select the radio button for the specific script that you want to generate, select options and click on Make HTML, then simply copy and paste the code provided into your web page.

Clock
This utility will create a real time java clock for your site. Very similar to the clock available inside the counter option. To setup this feature select the options that you want and click Save to generate the HTML code to insert into your pages.

Countdown
This will create a countdown box that counts down to a specified date. To setup the Countdown enter the date that you would like to count down to and click on Make HTML to generate the HTML code to insert into your pages.

FormMail Clone
FormMail Clone is a clone of Matt Wright's FormMail.cgi under a less restrictive license. It should behave almost exactly as FormMail.cgi, however, with it you are not able to customize the script at all and the output of your form results arrive in alphabetical order. To enable the FormMail Clone just click on it.

CGI Email
CGI Email is a CGI program written in C for Unix. It takes the input of a HTML form and converts it to an email format defined by the author of the form. By doing this the resulting email messages are easy to sort through. Using CGI Email requires more work than using Forms to Email programs such as FormMail. However, users with no programming experience can follow the simple step-by-step instructions in the CGI Email user guide. To enable this feature, simply click on it, you will then find instructions for setting it up.

Entropy Search
This is a simple search engine that will index the pages within your domain. To setup the Entropy Search click on Setup Search Engine and you will be provided with the HTML code that you will need to insert in your pages where you want the search box to appear. Once you have entered the code into your pages and have uploaded them to your account, revisit this area and click on Rebuild Search Index to complete the installation.

Entropy Banner
Entropy Banner is a simple random banner generator. You can use Entropy Banner to display random banners on your web pages. To setup this feature click on it, copy and paste the code into the pages where you would like to show the banners. To add banners, click on Add Banners. You can also modify the Rotation of the banners by clicking on Modify Rotation.

NOTE: You must name your pages that contain the code for your banner rotation with the extension .shtml in order for this feature to work.
